What is an indirect fired rotary kiln? The indirect fired rotary kiln is a new type of environmentally friendly rotary kiln developed based on the original single-drum rotary kiln, combined with the actual needs of customers. It is equipped with a combustion chamber on its outer side, typically using coal, gas, oil, and electricity as energy sources. The heat generated by combustion is transferred to the materials through the cylinder, and then the materials undergo drying, decomposition, and calcination at high temperatures before being discharged from the discharge valve. The waste gas generated during the calcination process is either treated and discharged or reused. The indirect fired rotary kiln is particularly suitable for calcining materials that require indirect and continuous heating, such as non-metallic minerals, mineral coatings, sludge, industrial waste, chemical products, agricultural waste, and so on.

The indirect rotary kiln can carry out operations such as combustion, calcination, incineration, decomposition, and drying for materials including non-metallic minerals, metallic minerals, chemical products, and agricultural products. Materials that can be processed include kaolin, magnesite carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, magnesium chloride, molecular sieves, catalysts, copper sulfate, barite, nickel oxide, titanium dioxide, zinc ore, sewage sludge, agricultural waste, industrial waste, etc.

The indirect rotary kiln used for calcining catalysts and molecular sieves effectively ensures product purity without contamination. Multiple temperature zones can be set to achieve reactions such as dehydration and crystal cell contraction efficiently.

Sludge Pyrolysis & Hazardous Waste Incineration

The indirect rotary kiln can subject sludge to high-temperature heating, undergoing processes such as pyrolysis, dehydration, thermal condensation, gasification, and carbonization under the effects of distillation and thermal decomposition. This conversion process turns moisture into condensate water, organic volatile components into combustible gas, and carbon elements into biochar. The condensate water, combustible gas, and biochar can all be recycled and reused. Toxic waste can be incinerated in a sealed kiln to fully recover toxic gases for centralized treatment.

External Fired Rotary Kiln Structure

The external fired rotary kiln is mainly composed of six parts: combustion system, control system, heating chamber cylinder, kiln body, driving device, and feeding and discharging system. All components are installed on an integral frame made of steel structure.

Combustion system: it mainly consists of burners, proportional control valves, solenoid valves, electric actuators, atomizing combustion aid devices, ignition devices, and so on.

Cylinder: the cylinder body is equipped with gears along its length, supported at both ends by support rollers. It is mainly driven to rotate by a variable frequency motor through the gears. The material of the cylinder body can be selected according to the process requirements.

Kiln body: it is mainly constructed with lightweight insulation materials and adopts a labyrinth seal composed of refractory materials and a kiln body fire-blocking ring.

Driving device: it can be either chain-driven or gear-driven. The gearbox has two shafts and can be equipped with a manual device for emergencies to prevent damage to the kiln body by manually moving it.

Feeding & discharging system: it mainly consists of a feeding hopper, feeding screw, mixing device, and feeding cover.

External Fired Rotary Kiln Working Principle

The material enters the rotary kiln cylinder uniformly through the feeding hopper at the kiln head via the feeding machine. The driving device rotates the cylinder, which has a certain inclination angle, causing the material to move forward along the axis with the rotation of the cylinder. There are lifting plates on the inner wall of the cylinder to flip the material continuously, ensuring even heating and thorough calcination. A combustion chamber is located outside the cylinder, and the heat generated by combustion is continuously transferred to the material through the cylinder. Under high-temperature conditions, the material undergoes drying, decomposition, and calcination processes, and then is discharged through the discharge valve.
