What is bamboo activated carbon? Bamboo activated carbon is an efficient and environmentally friendly adsorbent material made from natural bamboo. It has good adsorption performance and chemical stability, with high mechanical strength, well-developed microporous structure, fast adsorption rate, high adsorption capacity, easy regeneration, and durability. It is generally in granular or powdered form, with a maximum specific surface area of up to 2000 m²/g, and is known as the “black vitamin”. Bamboo activated carbon has the functions of moisture absorption, filtration, purification, disinfection, heat storage, and moisture retention, so its applications are extensive. After scientific processing, it can be widely used in environmental protection, the chemical industry, the food industry, and other fields.

Bamboo Activated Carbon Manufacturing Process

There are many production processes for bamboo activated carbon, with the most common being the physical method and chemical method. The biggest difference between these two methods lies in the activation process.

Physical activation: it utilizes high temperature and oxidizing gases to activate the carbonized raw materials, forming activated carbon with a well-developed pore structure and a large surface area.

Chemical activation: it involves adding certain chemicals (such as potassium hydroxide, phosphoric acid, etc.) to the raw materials, which are then converted into biomass charcoal through processes like carbonization and distillation. Subsequently, the charcoal is subjected to high-temperature pyrolysis in an activation furnace to obtain activated carbon.

* AGICO offers bamboo activated carbon production lines with both physical activation processes and chemical activation processes. The following production process adopts physical activation.

Step1: Raw Material Preparation

We need to select bamboo with certain hardness and density, and a moisture content lower than 8% as raw materials. Commonly used bamboo species include moso bamboo, arrow bamboo, etc. Then, the selected bamboo should undergo some processing treatments, such as drying, peeling, and cutting.

Step2: Carbonization

The primary purpose of carbonization is to transform bamboo into solid carbon with a porous structure. Typically, we place the bamboo in a sealed kiln and subject it to high temperatures (above 800-1000°C) to remove volatile and organic substances, converting it into a basic carbon skeleton. It’s essential to maintain a certain oxygen content during this process to ensure effective carbonization.

Step3: Activation

Activation mainly takes place in activation furnaces. It realizes activation treatment to bamboo charcoal by high-temperature heating, combined with gases, such as water vapor, oxygen, and carbon dioxide, to further enrich the existing porous structure, increase the adsorption surface area, and enhance adsorption capacity.

Step 4: Grinding & Screening

After activation is complete, we need to cool the bamboo activated carbon inside the furnace, then grind and screen them according to the specific application requirements, and finally obtain activated carbon products that meet the standards.

Bamboo Charcoal Vs. Bamboo Activated Carbon

Production Process

Bamboo charcoal undergoes only carbonization treatment, while bamboo activated carbon, in addition to carbonization, also undergoes activation treatment.

Microstructure

The structure of bamboo charcoal is mainly composed of large pores with diameters around 200nm. Bamboo activated carbon mainly consists of micropores, categorized into three types based on pore diameter:

Macropores (≥50nm), account for 10-30% of the total pore volume.

Micropores (≤2nm), constituting 60-90% of the total pore volume.

Mesopores (2nm≤φ≤50nm), comprising about 5-7% of the total pore volume.

Specific Surface Area

The specific surface area of bamboo charcoal ranges from 150 to 350 m²/g. In contrast, bamboo activated carbon can reach 900 m²/g or even higher than 2000 m²/g. With a more developed pore structure, the specific surface area is more large, leading to stronger adsorption capacity. Therefore, bamboo activated carbon exhibits stronger adsorption properties compared to bamboo charcoal.

Raw Materials & Consumption

The raw material consumption of bamboo activated carbon is 3-5 times higher than that of bamboo charcoal. For example, 6 tons of moso bamboo can yield 1 ton of bamboo charcoal, while it takes 3-5 tons of bamboo charcoal to produce 1 ton of bamboo activated carbon.

Shape

Bamboo charcoal comes in various forms, such as stick charcoal, flake charcoal, pellet charcoal, and charcoal powder. On the other hand, bamboo activated carbon generally exists in two main forms: powdered (with a diameter ≤0.18mm) and granular (with a diameter ≤8mm).
