What is wood-based activated carbon? Wood-based activated carbon is a high-efficiency adsorbent made from wood, sawdust, or other wood-based raw material. It is processed through multiple processes such as crushing, carbonization, and activation. It has a dense microporous structure, so the surface area is large (1500-2500 m2/g) and has a strong adsorption power, which can be used to improve drinking water quality and purify sewage, removing organic impurities and effectively removing larger molecular structures like MIB (2-Methylisoborneol) and Geosmin. Besides, it can also be applied in the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, and so on. The wood-based activated carbon is available in granular, columnar, or powder forms.

Why choose to invest in wood activated carbon manufacturing?
Easy Obtained Raw Material: branches, bark, and other wood residues in forestry areas and recycled sawdust, plank, and wood blocks on the market are all cheap and easily obtained raw materials. They meet the long-term needs of resource utilization and green development.
Immense Markets: wood-based activated carbon is available in many fields, such as sewage purification, food production, pharmaceutical preparation, sugar manufacturing, beverage production, etc. The vast market guarantees sales volume and huge profits.
Mature Production Technology: AGICO is a professional and experienced activated carbon manufacturing plant supplier. Our production line and equipment adopt mature and advanced technology to ensure high output and high automation while ensuring product quality.
Wood-based Activated Carbon Manufacturing Process
Carbonization and activation are the two most important stages in the wood-based activated carbon manufacturing process, especially activation, which can be divided into chemical activation and physical activation.
Physical Activation: physical activation refers to using appropriate oxidizing gas (water vapor, CO2, or air) to activate the carbonized material. It can open, expand, and create new pores in the carbonized material, thereby forming a developed pore structure. The process of physical activation is simple, there is no equipment corrosion and environmental pollution problems, and the activated carbon cleaning process is unnecessary.
Chemical Activation: chemical activation refers to adding chemicals to raw materials, then heating them under the protection of inert gas, performing carbonization and activation at the same time. Compared with physical activation, it has the advantages of short activation time, easy control, and a large specific surface area, but it has a certain pollution to the environment and a certain corrosion to the equipment, in addition, the activated carbon needs to be washed.
* AGICO can offer wood-based activated carbon production lines with both physical activation processes and chemical activation processes. The following production process adopts physical activation.
Step1: Raw Material Preparation
Raw materials need to be initially cleaned of dust and impurities attached to the surface, crushed into fragments with appropriate granularity if necessary, and then completed with batching. After that, they will be sent by conveyor to the carbonization kiln for calcination.
Step2: Raw Material Carbonization
In the carbonization kiln, under a high temperature of about 150-650°C, wood-based raw materials undergo a series of physical changes and chemical changes (thermal decomposition) to finally form a carbonized material with a certain scale of pore structure.
Step3: Carbon Activation
In the activation kiln, under a high temperature of 800-1050°C, the water vapor, carbon dioxide, or air are taken as activating gases to oxidize the carbonized material for further enlarging the pores in the body, creating new pores, and removing tar and other substances.
Step 4: Washing & Drying
It is an optional process. It aims to remove foreign ions and other impurities inside the activated carbon. The washing process includes acid and water washing which is carried out in the washing tank. After washing, the activated carbon will be dried in the dryer (120 degrees).
Step 5: Grinding & Screening
According to different application fields, wood-based activated carbon needs to be ground to different particle sizes or processed into special shapes. Therefore, we need to use grinding equipment, screening equipment, and other devices to complete this process.
Step 6: Packaging
After grinding and screening, we will use automatic packing machines to pack the finished wood-based activated carbon into bags, usually 25kg/bag (customized according to requirements). Then they will be loaded into trucks or stored in warehouses.

Coconut Shell Activated Carbon Vs Wood-based Activated Carbon
Wood-based Activated Carbon
The raw materials of wood-based activated carbon are various trees, sawdust, and other wood products. It has the characteristics of a large specific surface area, strong adsorption capacity, fewer ash impurities, high purity, fast filtration speed, light specific gravity, and high cost performance. In addition, it has the advantages of excellent decolorization and purification.
Coconut Shell Activated Carbon
The raw material of coconut shell activated carbon is coconut shell, which is mostly imported from Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It is the best quality among nutshell activated carbons. It has the characteristics of a developed pore structure, large specific surface area, high mechanical strength, fast adsorption speed, high adsorption capacity, easy regeneration, and durability.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Adsorption property: Both activated carbons are excellent. However, from a microscopic level, wood activated carbon has a larger porous structure and wider pore size, while coconut shell activated carbon has a smaller porous structure and narrower pore size. This leads to differences in the adsorption range and adsorption capacity of the two activated carbons.
Mechanical strength: The hardness and density of coconut shell activated carbon are higher than that of wood activated carbon. This leads to differences in their service life, regeneration performance, conversion efficiency, etc.
Application
Wood-based granular activated carbon is mainly used in oil and gas recovery, air purification, water purification, deodorization, and other field. Wood-based powder activated carbon is mainly used in sugar refining, beverage production, brewing, and other industries.
Coconut shell activated carbon is mainly used in the fields of domestic drinking water, industrial water and wastewater treatment, especially dechlorination, decolorization, deodorization, etc. in deep water purification.
Price
On the basis of the same effective ingredients, the price of coconut shell activated carbon is higher than that of wood-based activated carbon.
