Activated carbon is a kind of carbon with a special microcrystalline structure, which has the advantages of a developed pore structure, a huge specific surface area, and strong adsorption performance. It is widely used in various industries and fields. In the food, medicine, and chemical industries, it is mainly used for decolorization, refining, recovery, and separation of solutions. In environmental protection, it is a good helper to deal with water purification, wastewater treatment, and air purification. Even in the defense science field, it can be applied to protect against radioactive substances emitted by atomic energy facilities. Activated carbon has become an indispensable and important product in the national economy and daily life.

Types Of Activated Carbon
According to production method: physically activated carbon, chemically activated carbon;
According to raw material: wood activated carbon, shell activated carbon, coal activated carbon, and petroleum activated carbon;
According to particle shape: powder activated carbon, unshaped activated carbon, columnar activated carbon, spherical activated carbon, fibrous activated carbon, honeycomb activated carbon;
Raw Materials For Activated Carbon Production
There are many kinds of raw materials for the activated carbon production, and almost all carbon-containing materials can be used as raw materials, such as wood, sawdust, coal, walnut shell, fruit stone, coconut shell, oil palm, bamboo, palm kernel, petroleum coke, and so on. Coconut and walnut shells are generally considered the best materials. Activated carbons from them have high strength and very fine pores. Most of these raw materials are cheap and easy to obtain, coupled with the simple production process and a broad market, in general, activated carbon production is a novice-friendly and promising investment direction!

AGICO is a professional manufacturer of activated carbon making machines. We can provide customers with EPC solutions from five aspects: biomass carbonization, carbon activation, activated carbon regeneration, activated carbon acid washing and water washing, and crushing and screening!
We mainly use the physical production process, taking air and water vapor as activators, and combining it with special rotary kilns to produce activated carbon under high-temperature conditions. The activated carbon produced by this method has the advantages of strong adsorption performance, high mechanical strength, small fluid resistance, stable chemical properties, high purity, and easy regeneration.

Activated Carbon Manufacturing Process

1. Biomass Carbonization Process
Carbonization is one of the important processes in the production of activated carbon. It usually includes two parts: raw material carbonization and exhaust gas treatment.
Raw material carbonization is mainly carried out in a carbonization furnace. After the material enters the feed bin through the feeding port, it is fed into the carbonization furnace by the screw feeder. Depending on the inclination and rotation of the furnace body, the material moves slowly from the feeding port to the discharging port, gradually passing through the drying zone, the pyrolysis zone, and the carbonization zone. In this process, the carbonization furnace heats the material through thermal radiation so that the material is decomposed at high temperature to discharge non-carbon substances such as oxygen and hydrogen, and form fixed carbon with a skeleton structure and a certain strength to the greatest extent.
The tail gas produced in the carbonization process is mainly composed of two parts: the high-temperature gas produced by fuel combustion and the volatile gas produced by the material thermal decomposition. They all contain a small number of harmful substances, which will cause certain pollution, so they need to be treated before they can be directly discharged into the atmosphere. Under normal circumstances, the tail gas will be sent into an incinerator, fully combusted at a high temperature of 900-1100 ℃ until all combustible gases and harmful substances are burned into CO2, and then discharged into the atmosphere.

Biomass Carbonization Capacity: 8-25 t/d
Carbonization Furnace Size: Φ1.9-2.6m, L:10m
Control System: PLC control system
Equipment Material: Q345 heat-resistant steel

2. Carbon Activation Process
Carbon activation refers to the use of water vapor, CO2, oxygen, and other oxidizing gases as activators, contacting with carbon at high temperatures so that the carbon surface is eroded and a developed pore structure is formed, which has a strong adsorption capacity.
Carbon activation is mainly carried out in an activation furnace. The carbon enters the top feed bin through an elevator and then is evenly fed into the activation furnace by a feeder. With the rotation of the furnace body, the carbon passes through the preheating zone and enters the activation zone, where it contacts water vapor and oxygen at a high temperature until the activated carbon is formed. After that, the activated carbon gets into the discharge pipe of the cooling zone, gradually cools down to 200 ℃, and then automatically slides down to a water cooling device outside the furnace to reduce to normal temperature.

Carbon Activation Capacity: 2.6-8 t/d
Activation Furnace Size: Φ1.9-2.6m, L:15-22m
Power Consumption: 40-60 kW/hr
Control System: PLC control system

3. Activated Carbon Washing Process
The activated carbon washing process can be divided into the acid washing process and the water washing process. Main purpose: reduce heavy metals contained in activated carbon; degrade TDS concentration; adjust PH value; reduce dust on activated carbon surface and pores.
Activated carbon washing is carried out in an acid washing tank and a water washing tank. We need to inject demineralized water and hydrochloric acid in a certain proportion into the acid washing tank and stir them with high-pressure gas to form a certain concentration of a solution. After that, the activated carbon should be put into the washing tank, soaked and stirred, and then alternately heated by high-pressure gas and steam. This process should last about 1-2 hours. After the acid washing is completed, we should put the activated carbon into the water washing tank for repeated washing, and then dehydrating, drying, and sieving.
Carbon Washing Capacity: customizable
Production Cycle: 2.5 hours
Ash Content (after washing): ≤1.5%

4. Activated Carbon Regeneration Process
Activated carbon regeneration is the gasification reaction of adsorbed saturated activated carbon with water vapor and oxygen at high temperatures so that the organic matter blocked in the micropores is removed and its adsorption performance is restored.
Activated carbon regeneration is mainly carried out in a regeneration furnace. The waste activated carbon in the storage bin is fed into the regeneration furnace by the feeder. With the rotation of the furnace body, the waste activated carbon slowly passes through the preheating zone (drying), and then enters the carbonization and desorption zone. At this stage, water vapor and oxygen penetrate through the waste activated carbon and undergo a gasification reaction with it, so that the micropore surface is cleaned and its adsorption performance is restored. After that, the restored activated carbon enters the water cooling device below through the cooling pipe at the furnace tail, lowered to normal temperature.

Activated Carbon Regeneration Capacity: 10-20 t/d
Regeneration Furnace Size: Φ1.9-2.6m, L:12-17m
Production Cycle: 2 hours
Control System: PLC negative pressure control system
